Hey Guys, Gals and Toasters (or whatever you identify as),
My name is Grant Norris, I’m a 2o year old student at the University of Texas at Dallas (yes it is for the rejects of UT) and I am studying finance. However, my true passion lies in the fitness industry, but not the one a lot of people think of. When one pictures the fitness industry they tend to think of the guy who has a 500-pack and bathes in baby oil and the tears of the morbidly obese. My passion is strength sports, you know the ones that your mom cringes at when she watches it the one time of year it’s on tv, whether it is strongman, powerlifting, highland games or cross fit. The name of the sport doesn’t matter to me, just the raw power and athleticism that the physique sports are missing. If you’re anything like me then you’ll probably agree that watching monsters like Brian Shaw and Big Z battle it out on the last event at WSM is way cooler than watching Kai Greene lose to Phil Heath every year in a man thong pose down. While I have a lot of respect for physique athletes, I just don’t find pleasure in how they train or how they have to eat to look the way that they do.
Heavy Barbell will be about strength sports, more strength sports and then if something awesome happens in bodybuilding I’ll write about that too. I’ve trained for powerlifting for about two years and have recently decided to attempt my first strongman competition, I will try to keep my training log up to date on this blog, and you can watch me get my butt kicked by people who are actually strong.

What can I say, I’ve always liked weight lifting. But I want you to be careful. I’m not worried you’ll strain yourself but rather than your body will lose its flexibility. One of my friends was into heavy barbell 40 years ago (though it wasn’t called that then) and now his body is quite stiff. It is not from age but not enough natural flexibility. So I’ve gotten him into yoga and Tai Chi.
When I was in college, and for many years afterward, I did Jujitsu. It required a lot of stretching and flexibility. My sports were Judo, canoeing, and knife throwing, and I did well in all of them. The summer that I taught canoeing at a boy’s camp in main, where I canoed six hours a day, six days a week, after eight weeks I had added two inches to my shoulders. Just thought you’d like to know.
So, keep your body’s flexibility. Try yoga. It’s important.

I definitely agree with you! I do a lot of mobility work such as yoga and dynamic stretches to maintain my flexibility. Thankfully there is a lot of information today on how to balance strength and mobility. And seriously, two inch on your shoulders from canoeing? That’s crazy!

Seriously, two inches. You should see how much muscle I added on twenty years ago when i returned to the family farm after being a way for several years. I also added on a lot to my belly from sitting in a harvester two months out of ever year. Tractor gut is very hard to get off. But there’s a lot of lifting and digging (a.k.a. shovel work) on a farm. When I returned to farming, my coat size was 42 R and I wore large T-shirts. Now I wear extra-large T-shirts, not for my belly, but so that my arm pits don’t chaff. And now I’m a 44 R for sports coats. That, however, took a few years, not two months.
Good luck in heavy barbell. Glad you know about keeping flexible.

I’d like to add that some of the farmers I know who are as tall as me have bigger bellies than mine, but weigh less than me. My doctor tells me that I have more muscle on me than most people, but that it doesn’t show as much. He explained to me that muscle mass will build up between your abdomen muscles and the fat you carry and that’s why it is so hard to get rid of tractor gut and beer bellies. But I rarely drink beer–too much salt in it. Even so, I weigh about 260, wear size 38 pants, have a heavy bone structure (I don’t have to wear weights when scuba diving), and I am 5’11” tall. That’s because muscle mass is around 1/6th the size of fat mass.
People used to freak out in my Jujitsu classes at my strong hands and thick wrists, but compared to my relatives, including my dad who is 100 (his wrists look like large axles) and who still works with us in the fields, my wrists look tiny.
